Christ my Refuge,

You slept calmly in a fishing boat while the storm raged around you.

You know how I long for a good night’s sleep. How I need it. It’s not enough that my days are full of worry; my fears chase me endlessly through the night. I dread the thought that I won’t be able to sleep.

Lay your calming hand upon my shoulder. Remind me of all the things that will slow my body and mind. May the breath of your Spirit help me to deepen and slow my own breathing. May the assurance of your love help me to relax each muscle. Take away the things that distract and oppress me: the computer, the phone. Fill my mind with images of beauty and peace. May your comforting presence surround me.

I wake in a panic, after too little sleep. May I know instantly that you are beside me. Your friends slept while you agonized in Gethsemane, but you will never leave me to bear this alone.
